Where Is Your Mother?
Has it ever occurred to you that some of the most amazing men in the Bible were not raised by their own mothers? Think about it:
–Moses‘ was left by his mother, Jochebed, to be raised by Pharaoh’s daughter (who worshiped cats!)
–Samuel was left at the temple by his mother, Hannah, to be raised by the Priest Eli (Who had raised some pretty rotten sons already.)
–Joseph‘s mother, Rachel died giving birth to his little brother (and was sold into slavery by his brothers).
–David‘s mom and dad had to go into hiding while David ran from King Saul (who wanted to kill him).
So, if you are like me are you asking the Lord, “So, what’s up with that?” Each of the mothers of the men mentioned above were godly women, so why wouldn’t the Lord allow them to bring up their boys?
I wish I had a solid answer to this question. But, honestly-I don’t. What I do know is Romans 11:33 says, Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! and Psalms 145:17 assures us, The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
From these insights, I come away with the calm assurance that God knows what He needs to do in a boy’s life to mold his character for what He has planned. Sometimes God uses moms to help mold a son’s character. Sometimes God does a work in a young man through sorrowful loss–as I have seen Him do in the lives of sons who have tragically lost their mom.
And sometimes in His infinite knowledge–if The Lord sees how a mother would hinder the young man’s spiritual growth–He may through one circumstance or another put mom on the sidelines.
Has God allowed you to partner with Him to raise your son to into a man? If so, don’t take this privilege lightly. Will you ask God to give you His discernment to know when to pull yourself out of the way so God can teach, humble, encourage, or break your son?
I know-I know, I can hear you giving me a list of why your adolescent son needs his momma to rescue him. But I am telling you-In 30 years of ministry, I have watched “helicopter moms” get in God’s way. When this happens, God has to work around you, not through you!
You can trust God to complete the good work He has begun in your son. Better to pull yourself out of the equation, than for God to remove you–right? Rather than freaking out about circumstances, you must keep your eyes fixed on Jesus-the Author and Finisher of your faith–and your son’s–and not on circumstances.
When you contemplate the most amazing men in the Bible were not raised by their mothers, be thankful God has invited you to join Him in this noble calling, and prepare yourself with Scripture, mentors, and prayer to walk in the path of righteousness as the Lord leads.
